ST. LOUIS (July 13, 2006) – Advanced ICU Care announced today that it has named Mary Jo Gorman, M.D., MBA, as chief executive officer. A medical services company providing remote critical care monitoring services, Advanced ICU Care connects intensivists (critical care physicians) to hospital ICU patients via sophisticated telemedicine technology.
Dr. Gorman brings an experienced hand in developing and growing healthcare companies to her role as CEO of Advanced ICU Care. Previously, she served as chief medical officer for IPC-The Hospitalist Company, the largest provider of hospitalist services in the United States. (Hospitalists are physicians whose primary focus is the care of hospitalized patients.) At IPC, Dr. Gorman developed programs and strategies to enhance clinical performance and patient care. She also designed and implemented company-wide business development activities and led physician recruitment, training and monitoring programs, as well as compliance and risk management programs and IPC’s call center. Under her leadership, physician staff grew to 400 hospitalists across the country. Dr. Gorman joined IPC as regional medical director in 1999, after the company merged with Inpatient Care Group, the hospitalist practice she founded. Formed in 1996, Inpatient Care Group was the first hospitalist practice in St. Louis, providing hospitalist services to primary care physicians and hospitals.
“Mary Jo’s clinical, healthcare executive management and entrepreneurial experience will be invaluable as Advanced ICU Care works to optimize patient care and safety and decrease medical complications in ICU patients across the country,” said Tim Petersen, managing partner of Arboretum Ventures (a venture capital firm located in Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Advanced ICU Care board member. “We have great confidence in Mary Jo’s leadership, and her exceptional experience and personal qualities will allow for a seamless addition to the company’s already strong leadership team.”
Dr. Gorman also founded and serves as president of Critical Care Services, Inc., providing around-the-clock intensivist services in-house at two community hospitals. She has practiced as an intensivist and a hospitalist, and has held numerous leadership positions at DePaul Health Center in St. Louis, including chairperson of Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Gorman received an MBA from Washington University’s Olin School of Business, her doctorate of medicine from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Ill, and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology from St. Louis University. She is president of the Society of Hospital Medicine, and is a member of the American College of Physician Executives, the American Medical Association, the Society of Hospital Medicine, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. She obtained her board certifications in Critical Care Medicine and Internal Medicine.
