Our History

Advanced ICU Care was established to help transform ICU performance by bringing scarce critical care expertise to ICU patients via telemedicine. Responding to the nationwide shortage of intensivists and the recruiting difficulties community hospitals face, a group of intensivists at Critical Care Services, PC, a bedside intensivist staffing company, formed Advanced ICU Care in 2005.

Hear Dr. Mary Jo Gorman discuss the history of Advanced ICU Care.

Our early history: bringing intensivists to St. Mary's Health Center

Before Advanced ICU Care was formed, Critical Care Services, PC was called upon by St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City, MO. to provide intensivist staffing for its ICU. Despite Critical Care Services' success in staffing in-house intensivists in St. Louis, the nationwide intensivist shortage and St. Mary's relatively rural location challenged Critical Care Services' ability to find intensivists for St. Mary's.

After searching with no progress, the group approached St. Mary's with an alternative: a virtual ICU program, where Critical Care Services' intensivists could provide remote care and monitoring for the hospitals' ICU patients, along with a process improvement program to enhance patient outcomes and efficiency. In 2005, the founding members, including longtime intensivists Mary Jo Gorman, MD and Isabelle Kopec, MD, along with David Schopp, moved forward in licensing telemedicine technology developed by VISICU for remote monitoring of ICUs, and formed Advanced ICU Care.

A pioneer in ICU management

Advanced ICU Care became the first private group to license the VISICU technology, which previously had been acquired only by large, typically regional, multi-hospital systems with in-house intensivists. The technology combines clinical management software with patient data and video feeds and enables centralized intensivists and critical care nurses to remotely care for patients. Combined with experienced critical care specialists and a proprietary process improvement program, Advanced ICU Care's virtual ICU program optimizes care in the ICU. Located in the intensivist-rich city of St. Louis, Advanced ICU Care offers a centralized virtual ICU center, where its board certified intensivists and critical care nurses remotely care for ICU patients at St. Mary's as well as at other facilities across the country.
