21st Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care

21 Annual National Forum

IHI, 2009 Conference - booth and speaking engagement

One of Advanced ICU Care's founders, Isabelle C. Kopec, M.D., will present with St. Mary's Health Center's Vice President of Medical Affairs John Lucio, D.O., at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's 21st Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care. The presentation will be entitled "Using Telemedicine to Prevent the Preventable in the ICU."

The presentation will cover intensivist telemedicine remote monitoring programs for ICUs that are being successfully used to improve patient care and safety (as well as health care processes), while providing a viable solution to the intensivist shortage. The remote monitoring programs provide coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The presentation will specifically highlight the quality improvement program at St. Mary's, an SSM health care facility in Missouri that uses a virtual ICU program and has seen such improved outcomes as:

  • ICU mortality reduction of 24 percent after one year
  • 69 percent cardiac arrest incidence reduction
  • 14 percent shorter ICU patient total length of stay
  • Zero cases of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) since program inception
  • 58 percent drop in average patient days on the ventilator
