Einstein at Elkins Park Teams Up With Advanced ICU Care®

Collaboration Brings 24/7 Tele-ICU Solution to Critically Ill Patients

advanced icu telemedicine program at einstein at elkins parkPHILADELPHIA (October 10, 2011) - Einstein at Elkins Park, part of Albert Einstein Healthcare Network, announced today the successful implementation of the most advanced critical care telemedicine program available in hospital intensive care units today. Einstein recently partnered with Advanced ICU Care, the nation's largest independent provider of tele-ICU services, to deliver monitoring by highly trained intensivists physicians and critical care specialists 24 hours a day, enhancing the quality of care delivered to intensive care patients.

"We are excited to enter into this partnership, which will allow us to serve more critically ill patients right here in Elkins Park," says Ruth Lefton, Chief Operating Officer, Einstein at Elkins Park. "The intensivist-led program with Advanced ICU Care will enhance the quality of our ICU, improve patient outcomes and provide our staff the support we need."

Advanced ICU Care's team of intensivists and critical care nurses work remotely to complement the care plans that Einstein at Elkins Park's physicians set in motion during the day. They collaborate and provide 24/7/365 intensivist coverage, using sophisticated technology and electronic monitoring capabilities, to deliver the most advanced expertise and support to the ICU.

The intensivist physicians and critical care team are connected with each patient around-the-clock, via a real-time dashboard of vital signs, physiological data, medications, lab results and the patient's full medical history. Automated smart alerts identify problems before they become urgent, prompting immediate intervention. Two-way video access in each patient's room enables face-to-face consultations between bedside physicians, nurses, patients and families and the Advanced ICU Care team intensivists at any time of the day or night.

With this partnership with Advanced ICU Care, Einstein at Elkins Park will be able to provide the highest levels of critical care to patients in their own community. Right now, and in the future, hospitals face intensivist shortages. Approximately five million adults are admitted to intensive care units every year, while only about 10 percent of all hospitals have intensivist programs on site.

Independent studies demonstrate that this 24/7 intensivist monitoring significantly improves patient outcomes and patient safety in the critical care unit. In fact, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) demonstrates how the implementation of a tele-ICU intervention was associated with reduced adjusted odds of mortality and reduced hospital length of stay, as well as with changes in best practice adherence and lower rates of preventable complications. Another study published by the New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI) recommends that community hospitals with 10 or more ICU beds adopt tele-ICU care.

"We are pleased to partner with physicians and clinicians at Einstein at Elkins Park to provide additional surveillance and support of their critically ill patients," said Mary Jo Gorman, MD., MBA, Chief Executive Officer for Advanced ICU Care. "This strong alliance of critical care expertise combined with the most advanced telemedicine technology is working together to benefit and improve the health and safety of these patients."
