Modern Healthcare names Mary Jo Gorman as one of its Top 25 Women in Healthcare

ST. LOUIS (April 22, 2009) - Modern Healthcare has named Advanced ICU Care Chief Executive Officer Mary Jo Gorman, MD, MBA, to its list of the "Top 25 Women in Healthcare." The biennial list honors female healthcare executives who are making a positive difference in healthcare. The list and related story are available at www.modernhealthcare.com.

Gorman is CEO and co-founder of Advanced ICU Care, a pioneer in using telemedicine technology to bring remote intensive care specialists to ICU patients in community hospitals that may lack access to critical care expertise. Advanced ICU Care's intensivists (physicians specially trained in critical care) and critical care nurses provide around-the-clock patient monitoring, in collaboration with the hospitals' clinical teams, to improve the quality and safety of care, reduce patient stay, and increase hospital ICU volume and revenue.

Gorman formed Advanced ICU Care in response to some of the pressing issues facing healthcare: a severe shortage of intensivists and critical care nurses, coupled with an aging population and increasing demand for services; ongoing patient safety and quality initiatives; and hospitals' need for aggressive cost management.

"Mary Jo has shown an ability to truly effect change in the healthcare industry," said C. Thomas Smith, Advanced ICU Care board member. "Her inclusion on this list comes as no surprise - she's helping to reshape the way critical care is delivered to patients, ensuring a standard of care that is not compromised due to staffing shortages or variances in care."

Gorman joins female executives from all areas of healthcare, including many who are working to shape healthcare reform, on Modern Healthcare's list. The honorees were selected by a panel of senior editors at the magazine based on five criteria: leadership (within an organization as well as the industry as a whole); the ability to effect change in healthcare; mentoring qualities; and a willingness to share expertise.

"As a leader in hospital medicine, Mary Jo had nationwide impact on setting standards and performance of medical care in the hospital setting," said Larry Wellikson, MD, chief executive officer for the Society of Hospital Medicine. "She helped lead the hospitalist movement in St. Louis by founding the area's first hospitalist practice. She also has broken new ground in the area of critical care medicine - combining clinical expertise with technology to improve care."
