Advanced ICU Care founder Mary Jo Gorman, M.D., will present at the Society for Hospital Medicine's 2010 Annual Meeting. Dr. Gorman's presentation will be titled "ICU Workload: Do You Need Relief?"
It will address hospitalists' need for relief from expanding roles and responsibilities - including demands placed on them from the intensive care unit (ICU) - that have the potential to compromise patient care.
According to industry experts, the hospitalist model will continue to assume greater prominence in the healthcare system. Indeed, hospitalists are increasingly being asked to take on ICU patient care.
Given that the escalating demands of the ICU and its critically ill patients will persist as America's population ages, increased demand on ICU staffing will continue. The U.S. Census Bureau projects that the 65 and over population will grow by 50 percent in the next 10 years. As the population grows older, the volume and severity of cases treated in the ICU will continue to surge.
Dr. Gorman's session will offer ideas to provide relief to hospitalists facing severe workload challenges. The session will first identify the top three factors leading to over-extended hospitalists, and evidenced-based practical solutions will be provided.
Participants will be encouraged to discuss their unique challenges related to expanding roles and responsibilities, and examples will be selected to use as case studies for a guided problem-solving activity on how specific tools can address their particular situations.
